Technomics’ Runners Enjoy Cherry Blossom 10-Miler

Arlington, Virginia USA - April 11, 2010   Even the snowiest winter the D.C. area has ever seen didn’t deter Charlotte McIntosh and Ashlin Smith from participating in the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler.

The morning of the event, April 11, dawned cool but sunny, which was perfect weather compared to what the region went through in February. The worst winter on record saw 54.9 inches of snow dumped on the area, making it the snowiest season on record, since records were maintained. That weather played havoc with the two first-time long-distance racers’ preparation.

“The beginning of training was difficult since it overlapped with the major snowstorms that hit DC in February,” according to Smith. But McIntosh and Smith persevered and were ready for the run by the time April, and better weather, arrived in D.C.

McIntosh was using the event as training for a triathlon she was preparing for in June. Smith had other reasons, “I became motivated to run the Cherry Blossom 10-miler because so many of my Technomics co-workers participate in triathlons and marathons that it makes exercising infectious. I am not a seasoned runner or ever will be, so it's nice to be able to look back and know that at one point in my life I was able to run 10 miles without stopping."

While both had different reasons for participating, Smith and McIntosh also had different perspectives on running the race. McIntosh advised, “Be the leader of the pack. Start in the front, so you won't spend the entire race weaving around others who are slower than you." Smith advised, “Start off the run at a slower pace than usual -- also know that its 20% physical and 80% mental -- you've got to be confident that you can finish, and keep pushing your body past its comfortable limits."

The co-workers successfully ran the race and felt it was a great experience.
